What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire visible portion of an existing tooth. Its main function is to protect damaged or decaying teeth and restore their shape, size, and strength. Dental crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes to hide flaws, chips, or discolorations. Most crowns are made out of porcelain or porcelain fused to metal for additional strength.
A dental crown may be necessary to:
- Protect a weak tooth from breaking or hold a cracked tooth together
- Restore a broken tooth
- Cover and support a tooth with a large filling
- Hold a dental bridge in place
- Enhance the appearance of a misshaped or discolored tooth
The placing process
In order to ensure a perfect fit, the process for placing dental crowns requires two visits to LaCroix Family Dental. During the first appointment, one of our experienced dental team technicians will numb the tooth with an anesthetic and shave the surfaces to allow room for the crown. Then, the dentist will take impressions of the teeth above and below the tooth to ensure that the crown will not affect your bite. The impressions are sent off to a dental lab where expert technicians create and shape the finished product. While your crown is being created, you will be fitted with a temporary crown that helps maintain functionality and protects the damaged tooth. When the crown is ready, you will go in for a second appointment where the dentist will fit the permanent crown to your tooth and check your bite, making any necessary adjustments before permanently cementing the dental crown in place.
